When the legends and stories first appeared, sirens were always bird-women. Stories attributing fishlike qualities to them only began much, much later. Moreover, being similar to mermaids doesn't mean the encounters took place in the water.

It is also rather... ill-informed to declare that things with feathers can't swim. There are multitudes of bird species that hunt for prey by doing just that. They dive underwater to catch fish.

i'd suppose some birds do swim and some fish do fly, but i still wish ianeira had leg armor as well as her tail, dont you think that might be appopriate?

just a theory but do you mean like bird legs? so i know what to look up

Nope! Human legs! But the feet are on backwards! I forget what culture that myth is from though......But they're so that when the person walks, their footprints look like they're going in the opposite direction.

hmmm, this seems like an entirely different myth than i was talking about, i said ianeira should have leg armor for further land mobility since most mermaids can shange to have legs, im not quite sure how they should be backwards though........
