Post by TetraFang1248 » Sun Nov 07, 2010 6:51 pm

IIRC, painting black is very hard. Reds, yellows, and oranges are hard to put on black. Blues, greens, and grays are easier. But in any case, you'd have to put on multiple coats.

Repainting over black can be hard, but it does depend on what color you're trying to put over it. As mentioned, Reds, yellows, oranges can be difficult to get right, so can white. You're often better off painting the bit white beforehand, and then painting your true color over that.

(Or possibly spray white primer over the entire thing)

Yeah, you need to prime it, for sure.

Your best bet would be getting a blank body, either white, or skin, and paint over that. Or prime it with gray. Gray is a good neutral color for painting over, and you can paint pretty much anything except for the lightest colors over it in one coat.

Sorry but I haven't buy yet Busou Shinki figure, so I will use my Gunpla experience.

- First you have to sand it, it is a key to good effect. I haven't the quality of plastic of Busou Shinki, but you will have to use few gradients of sand paper with ending it via water sand paper.
- White or Gray primer works perfect. Can be a few thin layers, watch to not cover details, maybe you will have to modeling knife to make them seen again/deepen them.
- What you will be using? An Aerograph/Spray can/Brush? Masking tape or even plain plasticine or Vaseline will help to cover the parts that you don't want to paint over them.
- What type of paint you will use? Acrylic, Enamel, and Lacquer based paint?
- What type of topcoat? Flat/Matt or Gloss/Shine? It is a MUST! It will protect a body.

And what color Scheme? It is hard to choose a good looking one, so few matching colors combos.

I am new here, but I hope that I have helped.
And I am sorry for my bad English.

I know, I know. I can also understand German and Czech language.
But still I have problems with grammar.
I was autodidact.

And you could post that via PM, not making an Off topic.

So to stay on topic.

- You should have always a MAIN color and add additional suited to it.
- Black and White suits ALL other colors always. Try to paint some sorts of stripes in that color, or really wide pannel lines.
- Try to found unused decals to add variety over just plain paint, or try to use freehand painting to add some decent accents.
- Drybrushing and Paint washes/inks are yours best friend.
- Colors suits Characters and Specialties, you will not paint a sniper in bright colors, not a Demon in pink (ok, Slaanesh cultists please don't try to say anything).
- Have you been thinking about Camo scheme? It would suit Busou Shinki like Murmeltier well.
- Try to add metal parts like Wires or Metal studs as rivets http://gunplafederation.blogspot.com/20 ... 05_19.html
- "Clear/Natural Metal" - Look at the planes, sometimes the have unpainted body, that clearly shows a bare metal/aluminum. Look for "Buffable metallic paint". I have never tried that option, so I don't have anything to say from my experience.
- It have to be a "Clean" paint, or some battle damage, wear or weathering?
- You should have to yours color scheme drawn on paper or really know it well, it helps with undercoats. In my case I always have problems with Yellow, if I remember most of people have problems with that color.

Useful tips.

Warm your spray can for few minutes in WARM (not boiling) water (don't use microwave or stove), you should have easily put a finger in that water. Warm paint sprays better and settles on surface smoothly. It is just a school physics lesson compressed gas cools when it is released, warming the can counters the effect.

Always use gloves to not leave any body oils etc, after painting cover the parts with box to prevent dust gluing to fresh wet paint.

Wait 20-30 minutes for another layer of paint, no more that 3 hours. Most of the times 3 layers are perfect if you are using gloss paint. Don't touch model for 1 day - flat paint, 3 days - gloss paint.

ALWAYS have ready ALL you Materials before the process. Empty bottles and Wooden sticks are extremely useful. Use wooden sticks with that "crocodile" attached to them to hold yours models, Double-sided tape is useful too.
